Waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited in collaboration with Graphic group communications undertook a massive clean-up exercise at the Sunyani market.
The exercise forms part of the on-going “Graphic – Zoomlion Sanitation awareness campaign” being undertaken in all regions of Ghana to promote clean environment.
The team comprising of the Krotihene of Sunyani Traditional Council, Ghana National Fire Service, Sunyani Municipal Assembly, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Graphic group among others were seen busily de-silting drains, sweeping lorry stations and evacuating small heaps of refuse dotted around some spots in the market.
The fire service team with the help of their fire tenders washed the main drain along the market street among other team members educating patrons of the market on the need to keep their environment clean.
The Krotihene of Sunyani Traditional Council, Oboaman Bofotia Boamponsem in an address to patrons of the market tasked them to be responsible for cleaning their immediate environment .
He urged the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to enforce their bye-laws and issue spot fines to sanitary offenders to develop good attitudes towards sanitation.
The Bono Regional Vector Control Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr. Ernest Osei Brenya who led the team to undertake the clean up exercise indicated that the team is dedicated towards maintaining Sunyani as one of the cleanest city in Ghana and regular cleaning is being undertaken to keep the communities clean.
He said households within the region should avail themselves for the wastebins being distributed to help collect the uncollected waste that finds its way unto unauthorised places such as streets and drains.
SANITATION DIALOGUE SESSION
A sanitation dialogue session which preceeded the clean-up exercise was organized for stakeholders within the sanitation sector within the region.
A member of the panel and Deputy Bono Regional Health Director, Dr. Kwabena Kumi commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for investing in huge infrastructure for efficient waste management “Zoomlion Ghana Limited is doing well and the construction of the waste recovery plant in Bono region among other projects will help improve public health in the region” he pointed out.
The News Editor of the Daily Graphic Newspaper, Mr. Samuel Doe Ablordepey in a statement indicated that the Graphic group and Zoomlion Ghana Limited is undertaking sanitation awareness in all regions of Ghana to deliberate and bring lasting solutions to
sanitation problems in the country.
He said the team will award the cleanest region after it has toured all the regions to create enthusiasm among community members on the need to keep their communities clean.
The Krotihene of Sunyani Traditional Council who chaired the panel discussion advocated that plastics producers should pay more to help manage the plastic waste menace in the country.
He admonished the government to resource the Environmental Health officers in the MMDAs to enforce the sanitation laws to achieve a clean Ghana.
The “Graphic-Zoomlion” sanitation awareness campaign is a nationwide exercise aimed at educating Ghanaians on the need to keep their environment clean.
The campaign which was launched in Accra on April 28, 2021 have witnessed stakeholders Ashanti, Eastern, Volta, Oti, Ahafo and Bono regions respectively.
The team will visit the remaining regions with the hope that Ghana can ultimately become the cleanest country in Africa.
