The Jospong Group of Companies has reinforced Africa’s leadership in environmental sustainability, making a compelling case for African-led, context-driven solutions at the maiden City Church Circular Sustainability Summit, hosted by Amsterdam City Church in the Netherlands.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Alexander Kumi-Larbi Jnr., Director of International Business at Jospong International Business (JIB), underscored the urgency of rethinking sustainability frameworks for Africa, stressing that the continent’s future “cannot be copy-pasted from developed economies.” Instead, he noted, Africa’s sustainability pathway must be locally contextualised, investable, scalable, and driven through strategic partnerships.
With Africa urbanising faster than any other region and projections indicating that one in every four people globally will be African by 2050, Dr. Kumi-Larbi Jnr. highlighted that sustainability on the continent is no longer a regional concern but a global risk management imperative.
Drawing from the Jospong Group’s journey, he illustrated how circular economy solutions can succeed at scale when they are people-centred, job-creating, dignifying, and financially sustainable.
From pioneering the use of tricycles for waste collection to operating modern waste treatment and recycling facilities across Ghana, the Group’s evolution demonstrates how inclusive innovation can deliver measurable environmental and social impact.
This model, he noted, is now shaping the Group’s continental expansion. Through Jospong International Business, the Jospong Group currently has engagements in over 29 African countries, with multiple contracts already signed—clear evidence that African-led solutions can travel, scale, and endure beyond national borders.
The summit also featured a panel discussion on practical approaches to environmental sustainability, with Ms. Naa Ayorkor Koney of the Jospong Group contributing insights on translating sustainability ambitions into actionable, on-the-ground solutions across African communities and cities.
A major highlight of the event was the official launch of Jospong GRAIN NL (Amsterdam), unveiled by Ms. Devyani Kundu and Mr. Strive Kakraba of the Jospong Group. The platform is designed to connect bankable African sustainability projects with global expertise, technology, and green and climate finance. According to Dr. Kumi-Larbi Jnr., Africa’s challenge is not a lack of ideas, but limited access. “Jospong GRAIN NL is being built to bridge that gap,” he said.
Further demonstrating its commitment to nurturing innovation and future sustainability leaders, the Jospong Group sponsored the Summit’s Innovation Pitch, encouraging participants to present creative solutions in environmental sustainability. The winning participant was awarded a fully funded internship with the Jospong Group, creating a direct pathway from innovation to real-world implementation.
